I need to have a chat with JWZ.

This is a comprehensive explanation of what kind of crap ASCAP, BMI, and the RIAA do. This particular explanation is aimed at webcasting, but much of it also applies to stores, cafes, bars, clubs, etc. As such, it applies to the coffeeshop that I work in. I need to swing by DNA Lounge sometime and see if I can squeeze a few minutes out of him for some advice.

This problem is fixed very easily...stop caring. Unless you profit from music and that is outlined in your business plan they probably won't be trying to sue you, Insurgo dealt with these ass tonsils the entire time we where open, and never paid them a fucking dime. Besides coffeeshops are the last of their concern.

As much as I would love to simply stop caring, I can't. We are not apparently the least of their problems, or they wouldn't be personally calling us from Georgia or wherever it is they are based out of.

Technically, we do profit from the music as it enhances the atmosphere in which we operate, and as such, affects the clientele. I wish I were making that up, but they've sued coffeeshops my size before.

My main problem with them currently is this:

Their 'representative' that they sent in apparently can't count. This 'representative' reported back to them that we have seating for 40. *sigh* We have seating for 17. Literally. 17. Fire code. one bathroom. seating for 17, and only 2 speakers in the whole place.

That is what we responded with when they called us the last time. We asked them to send their representative back in and have them introduce themselves so that we can work something out. We have little choice in the matter since we do not have multi-million-dollar backers willing to pay the court costs and lawyer fees that would arise out of us saying "fuck off." to them.
